![]() Much of the racist rhetoric directed at this new stream of migrants and refugees is entirely of a piece with the surge in anti-immigrant sentiment that has accompanied the improbable rise of Donald Trump as a Republican presidential candidate. This deserves the full attention of American feminists. ![]() We are now seeing an apotheosis of cruelty in Europe, including repeated firebombing of asylum-seeker hostels in Germany, and mass slander perpetrated on the refugees and migrants at Calais by the British media - aggression which is only now beginning to be met with organized displays of humanity and kindness, such as a crowd of well-wishers greeting a train full of refugees in Vienna. Many of the refugees wish to push on to Northern European countries.īut the reaction has, obviously, been an embittered one, and the image of non-white refugees as a crowd seeking access to European states has created no small measure of panic on the far right. Desperate refugees have clashed with often abusive riot police firing tear gas into crowds of people that include children and the ill throughout the southeastern EU, from Greece through Macedonia to Hungary. Hundreds die annually trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, thousands more are now caught in the vertiginous limbo of refugee life in impromptu camps in Calais, France, near the mouth of the Eurotunnel, and throughout the Balkans.Īs I write, hundreds of refugees are camped inside a Budapest train station, many of them are ticket-holders but are being blocked by police from boarding any westward bound trains. More had to be taken to a local hospital after another overcrowded vehicle was found by Austrian police. Refugees, many fleeing from Syria’s civil war and Iraq’s ISIS-fuelled violence, were found dead by the dozens in the back of a truck in Austria. As I write this, a stunningly tragic picture, one of those pieces of photojournalism that defines an era, is now blasted across the top of the Huffington Post website: a Turkish police officer carrying the limp body of a drowned boy from a resort beach Wednesday morning.ĭeath stretches across the Mediterranean and into Europe’s mountainous interior. But it has garnered considerably less attention in the United States until very recently. ![]() While I traveled across the continent a few weeks ago it was a top story again and again in the UK, Sweden, and Denmark, with headlines blaring out from airport and railway newsagents’ in a dozen languages. On Sunday, the Border Patrol had 22,259 people in custody, down 23% from four days earlier. For weeks now the so-called “Migrants Crisis” has dominated headlines in Europe. Nuñez-Neto reiterated the administration’s disagreement with the court order Wednesday, while acknowledging that fewer crossings have eased custody conditions. On Tuesday, a federal judge in Florida extended his order, first issued last week, to prohibit the quick releases. They were instead given notices to report to an immigration office within 60 days, drastically cutting down on processing time and allowing agents to open space in holding facilities. The Border Patrol had more than 28,000 people in custody last week, doubling in two weeks and prompting the agency to release thousands without notices to appear in immigration court. So far, President Joe Biden’s warnings that the border will be “chaotic for a while” have not unfolded as some thought, with numbers one about one-third of the government’s high-end estimates. ![]() Nuñez-Neto said the number allowed on the mobile app will increase soon but did not say when or by how much. has also been admitting 1,000 people a day at land crossings with Mexico if they apply in northern Mexico on a mobile app called CBPOne. The Border Patrol stopped migrants of all nationalities 182,114 times in April, up 12% from March but down 11% from the same period last year. Figures released Wednesday show all four nationalities took advantage of the parole offer in April but, among the four, only Venezuelans also crossed the border illegally in historically large numbers, second only to Mexicans. monthly if they apply online with a financial sponsor and arrive by plane. The new legal pathways include allowing up to 30,000 Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans to enter the U.S.
